ALMOST all the exhibitors at the giant Antiques For Everyone fair, held at Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre from April 3 to 6, arrived with far from high hopes. This was just as well for a good many of them, but not for all.

FOUNDED in 1990 by Devonshire-based Madeline Marchand, who operates as Fair Antiques, the next twice-yearly East Berkshire Antiques Fair will be held at the Berkshire College of Agriculture, near Maidenhead, over the Bank Holiday weekend of May 3 to 5.

MURMURS around the trade indicate that business at fairs is easier out of London than in the capital, which bodes well for one of our top provincial events, The Harrogate Antique and Fine Art Fair held from May 1 to 5 at the Harrogate International Centre, bang in the centre of town.

WITH around 80 exhibitors the Spring Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair was well down on its usual total and visitor figures were also down at the marquee in Battersea Park between April 8 and 13.

ONE of the trade’s long-time favourite events, The Little Chelsea Antiques Fair, will be held at Chelsea Old Town Hall in the King’s Road, London SW3 on April 14 and 15.

BUSY Norfolk organiser Liz Allport-Lomax has been quite quiet of late, having cancelled her February fixture at Norwich due to problematic parking. But Lomax Antiques Fairs are now back on the road with their first fair of the year, the third annual North Norfolk Fine Art and Antiques Fair at Sussex Barn, Burnham Market over the Easter weekend from April 19 to 21.

May 2003 will see the largest migration of antique dealers in Toronto’s history as the 25-year lease on the city’s Harbourfront Antique Market ends and the market’s 50 dealers move to two new homes in the heart of the city’s tourist and entertainment district.

MIGHTY Maastricht closed on Sunday March 23 and if there ever was any dispute as to whether this was the best antiques and art show in the world then the debate must now be over. In the most adverse circumstances – and they don’t get much more adverse than a war breaking out halfway through proceedings – the fair again triumphed and more business was achieved than at any fair since last year’s Maastricht.

HELD a little earlier in the month than usual, The Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair will run at its now trademark marquee in Battersea Park, London SW11 from April 8 to 13.

MAYFAIR’s smart antiques market, Grays, is close enough to Bond Street to attract its fair share of fashionistas, but now it has become a couture centre itself with the opening last week of the luxuriously appointed Vintage Modes.

RUMOURS that the Decorative Antiques and Textiles Fair, scheduled for April 8-13 in Battersea Park, London has been cancelled are completely untrue, say the organisers.

WHAT business there was came on the final day of the Cheshire County Antiques Fair, staged by Cooper Antiques Fairs at Arley Hall over the weekend of March 14 to 16.

FROM April 3 to 6 the Spring staging of the Antiques For Everyone fair fills Hall 5 of Birmingham’s National Exhibition Centre with what the organisers always claim to be more than 600 dealers, staked out in the now familiar format of Section One and Section Two.

ENERGETIC Essex organiser Robert Bailey is never more relaxed than at his London flagship fixture, the Claridge’s Antiques and Fine Art Fair which will be staged at the exclusive Mayfair hotel for the ninth time from April 2 to 6.

YET again the Bath Decorative and Antiques Fair, held at the Pavilion, North Parade from March 5 to 8, proved a huge success with both the 46 exhibitors and the myriad dealer customers.

FROM April 10 to 13 the Glasgow Art Fair, the largest contemporary art fair outside London, will run for its eighth year in its pavilions in George Square in the heart of the city.

CONSIDERING the pervading gloom and doom, exhibitors at the private view of TEFAF Maastricht last Thursday night were surprisingly optimistic and the overall mood at the packed party was distinctly upbeat.

MORE than 250 dealers from across the US, Canada and Europe will stand at the 27th Annual Chicago O’Hare Spring Antiques Show at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont, Illinois from April 25 to 27.

The organisers of the Newark fair have taken a tough stance on stallholders who leave their two-day event early. The clampdown comes after complaints from both stallholders and visitors who object to dealers leaving the fair before the official closing time of 4pm on Tuesday.

Bermondsey Market, a London institution since the 1950s, is to change its current format, downsizing from three to two separate trading areas next month. The move, part of a Southwark Council bid to revitalise the area, is in part a reaction to the decline in the size of the market.
