Since its launch in 1995 this event has gained in both prestige and size and this year 50 galleries from Scotland and England, but also from Lisbon, Krakow and Paris, will show.
Last year the fair attracted 16,000 visitors and each exhibitor sold an average of 36 works, with 40 or so dealers selling a roughly estimated total of £780,000 worth of art. What is more, 20 per cent of them said most of their sales were to first-time art buyers.
The event is backed by the Scottish Arts Council and its pull for visitors to Glasgow has been recognised with the award of the Thistle Award for Cultural Tourism. The Glasgow Art Fair is part of RAW: Real Art Weekend, a feast of contemporary art in the city from April 9 to 13 involving 17 visual arts organisations in the city, both public and private.
Admission to the fair is £4.
