With the Olympics over and the new season well under way, there is plenty of activity in the French art market.

Instantly recognisable and with a perfect provenance, a painting by Salvador Dalí (1904-89) more than lived up to its expectations at a sale held by Artcurial Beurret Bailly Widmer (22% buyer’s premium).

The Paris auction houses will also be hosting plenty of sales devoted entirely or in part to works on paper.

Paintings by the Anglo-Swiss artist Henry Fuseli, who was born in 1741 as Johann Heinrich Füssli, seldom make it to auction.

Auction firms in France followed a more traditional course in 2023 according to the latest figures.

Pictured here are two paintings by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806) appearing on the French auction scene this season within the space of a month - one sold, the other upcoming.

An early 17th century gouache by the German artist Johann König (1586-1642) was a highlight of the Ivoire Troyes (24% buyer’s premium) auction.

A single-owner sale of property from a Parisian collection will be on offer at Artcurial in Paris on September 21.
