Latest ceramics sales demonstrate how Martinware demand has moved on beyond Wally Birds

A 43-lot private collection of Pilkington’s ceramics from Manchester opened Tennants’ (24/22% buyer’s premium) sale of 20th century design held in Leyburn on October 7.

The Cotswold Auction Company (22% buyer’s premium) offered this version of the well-known Pilkington’s Lancastrian St George and the Dragon charger in Cheltenham.

A large plaster relief panel executed by Pilkington’s, designed by Gordon Forsyth and modelled by Richard Joyce, will be offered at Gildings next month.

A Pilkington’s vase that fetched an auction record for the Lancastrian Pottery last month has sold to a friend of the factory’s decorator Gordon Forsyth (1879-1952), who created the rare piece.
