Collectables
The term ‘collectables’ (or collectibles) encompasses a vast range of items in fields as diverse as arms, armour and militaria, bank notes, cameras, coins, entertainment and sporting memorabilia, stamps, taxidermy, wines and writing equipment.
Some collectables are antiques, others are classed as retro, vintage or curios but all are of value to the collector. In any of these fields, buyers seek out rarities and items with specific associations.

25 February 2019Laws relating to antique firearms and bladed weapons are set to change in the UK this year. Dealers, auctioneers and collectors will be affected by both the offensive weapons bill and an amendment to the Policing and Crime Act 2017 which are set to become law in 2019.

Obituary: Book dealer Tony Parkinson
25 February 2019Tony Parkinson, who died suddenly just after Christmas, at the age of 75, was a much-respected and well-loved book dealer in Southport for over 40 years. He opened Parkinson’s Books in its current location on Lord Street in 1981, specialising in antiquarian books, of which he had an encyclopaedic knowledge.

Trenchers celebrating a 17th century marriage bid to $16,000
25 February 2019This set of English painted sycamore trenchers were a wedding gift to Roger Simpson and his bride Mary in 1625 from their cousin. Each plate has an inscription that includes either the bride’s or groom’s name alongside verses about love, sex and marriage.
Marvellous comic price for Spider-Man
25 February 2019Catalogued as the most valuable Silver Age comic book by far, a copy of Issue No 15 of Amazing Fantasy, the 1962 comic that saw the first appearance of Spider-Man, sold for £14,500 in a January 25 sale held by Excalibur Auctions (20% buyer’s premium) of Amersham.

25 February 2019In ATG No 2380 February 23 I wrote a piece on the annual antiques fair held at Wilton House in Wiltshire from Friday to Saturday, March 8-10. It is worth noting that the Provincial Booksellers’ Association (PBFA) is running an antiquarian and out-of-print book fair at the Michael Herbert Hall in the village of Wilton on Sunday, March 10.

Unopened Super Mario Bros video game sets auction record in the US
19 February 2019An unopened copy of the classic video game Super Mario Bros set a new auction record when it recently sold in Dallas, Texas for $80,000 (£62,000). The game is the only known sealed example from a test market release in 1985.
Votes for Women anniversary effect lasts into 2019 with a fresh Suffragette consignment
19 February 2019Anniversaries can tempt out collections to auction but it can have a longer-lasting effect. Last year marked the centenary of votes for women in Britain and a lot coming up in 2019 shows the consignments are still out there.
