Charterhouse are auctioneers in Sherborne, Dorset. The firm used to be known as The Long Street Salerooms and was previously owned by Phillips.

As well as sales dedicated to areas such as silver, jewellery, stamps, coins, militaria, books and antiques, there are classic and vintage car sales that take place once a month at the auction house.

Selection of arms and armour hammer highlights

Attributed to the arms manufactory at Ripoll in northern Catalonia, this pair of 18th century miquelet-lock belt pistols (below) proved the surprise lot of the sale held by Italian arms specialist Czerny (20% buyer’s premium) in Sarzana on December 9. In good condition with an overall inlay of pierced and engraved decorative steelwork, they sold for €15,500 (£13,600).

Books from the library of neurologist Dr MacDonald Critchley sold as part of an April 20-21 auction held by Charterhouse (19.5% buyer’s premium) naturally included books related to his professional interests, among them copies of his own works. But the lot that attracted most bidding interest was a novel by HG Wells.

Lotus car made famous by The Prisoner gears up for Dorset auction

“I am not a number, I am a free man,” was the cry of Patrick McGoohan in TV series The Prisoner. The important number at the Charterhouse auction house on February 12 is £20,000-25,000 - the estimate for a 1963 Lotus Super Seven S2, the model made famous by appearing in that 1960s cult favourite show.
