Der Jäger (The Hunter) by Georg Baselitz, estimated at €450,000-650,000 at Lempertz.
As Baselitz put it: “If you are remixing popular music, you change the rhythm or the sound… what I do is something entirely different. I have thought for a long time about what to call what I do. I liked the word ‘remix’ because it comes from youth culture. The oldies don’t as a rule know what the word remix means.”
On June 1, Lempertz in Cologne is offering the 9ft 10in x 8ft 2in (3 x 2.5m) remix Der Jäger (The Hunter) from 2007. It is based on his painting of the same name from 1966, which was auctioned by Sotheby’s, New York, in November 2018 for $3.615m (including premium).
Baselitz’s treatment of the subject is that of his so-called fractured paintings, divided into sections with different aspects of the motif. The most noticeable difference in the execution is that the early version had a consistent colour scheme, whereas the sections of the remix become progressively less coloured: the bottom segment, depicting the sprawled figure of a dead or sleeping animal, is basically black and white. The other difference is the guide in Cologne, which is €450,000-650,000.
Baselitz was born as Hans-Georg Kern in 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, a small town in Saxony, from which he took his artistic name.
