Last week, a copy of the photo signed by Einstein sold for $125,000 (£95,300) in an online auction at Nate D Sanders. The photo, which measures 7 x 10in (18 x 25.5cm), was in good condition and shows Einstein seated between Dr Frank Aydelotte of the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton and Aydelotte’s wife. Often the photo is cropped down to show only Einstein.
The photograph was offered by the Los Angeles auction house for a minimum bid of $100,000 and was won with a single bid to an anonymous buyer.
In June another uncropped version of the photograph, unsigned, took a premium-inclusive $43,750 (£35,650) at Christie’s New York. Another version of the photograph also sold online for $125,000 in 2014. RR Auction offered a cropped copy that was signed by the physicist and included a German rhyme written in the lower border.
