I am nearly 80 years old and have traded at this particular fair for over 50 years. It was the only fair I still did as it was very local to me and I am in ill health.

I have emails from him reassuring traders would be refunded once York Racecourse had refunded him his money from the cancelled fairs. I also unfortunately paid in advance for fairs he said were planned at Beverley this year, as my son could take me there in his car.

I waited until March and called on him several times. Needless to say, I am still waiting for a refund. Since then, I have spoken to several traders in the same situation.

ATG replies: As reported in ATG No 2586, Trading Standards and York council urged dealers who are out of pocket to contact Citizens Advice.

Matthew Boxall, head of public protection at City of York Council, said in March: “We have received two complaints from people who said they paid for a stall at an antiques fair that didn’t go ahead and are yet to get a refund. As ever we encourage people to contact Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133 to report concerns and ask for advice and support on the options available to them. Citizens Advice pass details of complaints to trading standards for information and can lead to further enquiries being made.”
