This portrait photograph of Winston Churchill (1874-1965) is signed and inscribed PG Oates from Winston S. Churchill, 1954.
It is part of a substantial Downing Street archive relating to Peter Geoffrey Oates (1919-2017), a private secretary to Winston Churchill and Clement Attlee, included in Bellmans’ sale of Printed Books, Maps and Manuscripts in Wisborough Green West Sussex on July 14.

An Illuminated manuscript Book of Hours, c.1450, estimated at £5000-8000 at Dominic Winter.
The sale at Dominic Winter in South Cerney on June 15 includes this Illuminated manuscript Book of Hours. Penned in Latin in northern France or Flanders, c.1450, the 156 leaves of text and illuminations include two full-page miniatures and one smaller miniature to the final leaf.

Souza highlights words and lines
Toovey’s books sale in Washington, West Sussex, on July 26 includes this limited-edition copy of Words & Lines by the artist Francis Newton Souza (1924-2002), founder member of the Bombay Progressives group. Published by Villiers in 1959, this copy, in the original wrappers, is number 6 of 50 signed by Souza.
