Indeed, almost half of those visiting Margate now name it as the main reason for their trip. It has welcomed 415,000 visitors in 2015-16 and 2.3m to date. Visits to the Thanet district, which also includes Broadstairs and Ramsgate, are up 16%.

Two years ago Ruth and Richard Tozer, with director and business partner Kevin Shaw, opened the Petticoat Lane Emporium in a 15,000sq ft Edwardian warehouse in Ramsgate.

The vintage market is doing well, says Shaw, with 202 stalls and three shops. “Some 160 of the dealers here have been with us either since the opening or within six months of the opening and we still have a short waiting list.”
