The Mercato Metropolitano takes place in Newington Causeway near Elephant & Castle in the south of the capital, with the next on Saturday April 29

A whopping 45,000ft of industrial space, a former paperworks factory, houses a variety of food stalls alongside bars and seating for 1000.

This venue was described in a food review last year by the food critic Jay Rayner, as “in a renal-failure shade of yellow”.

While this column doesn’t take a view about the colour of the tables here, the Guardian review was a positive one overall, it should be added. Also on offer are cookery lessons, urban growing projects and the Backyard Cinema.

To this urban street food experience can be added the monthly Saturday vintage and fleamarket experience courtesy of Stonehill, who launched the fair in March.

Stonehill, whose current pop-ups are at Wilton’s Music Hall in east London and St Stephen’s Church in Hampstead, as well as at IACF Alexandra Palace, says: “The fair is at the back of the Mercato with tables set for diners cleared for our vintage stalls – it’s all under one roof.”
