Although still in its planning stage, the basic idea is to have a bidding account registered to the couple into which guests can enter a contribution. These funds can then be used by the newly-weds to buy objects as they appear at upcoming sales.

The initiative arose out of a request by one of Brightwells regular customers who tied the knot last year. When asked if they could accommodate a wedding gift service, the Leominster auctioneers happily obliged. As a result, the client spent the next six months making use of the account, purchasing silver, ceramics and furniture that he and his partner both liked.

Having also been approached by another couple getting married in August, Brightwells have decided to formalise their wedding arrangements. Geoffrey Crofts of Brightwells said their service is likely to include 5 per cent discount as a special “auctioneers’ gift” and guests who have made contributions to the account will be sent photographs of the objects that the couple buys.

Although the dealers’ association LAPADA offer a wedding service, the initiative is thought to be a first in the auction world. Mr Crofts expects Brightwells will advertise the service at local wedding fairs. “It will hopefully get people into the saleroom and grab a bit of attention,” he said.
