Five questions with Jacob Markies

Focused on early 20th century, Art Deco and mid-century furniture and sculpture, Jacob Markies began working with his father Jeroen in 2018 and recently has taken over much of the day-to-day running of Markies Antiques to free Jeroen to focus on buying. The dealer will be exhibiting at the Classic Antique Fairs’ autumn event at the NEC later this month.

1 What is one challenge that collectors currently face?

Items are being compared online now with a simple click and picture, but the results are not always accurate and do not represent individual items’ quality, authenticity and market value – making it difficult to navigate and buy with confidence for those new to collecting.

2 One question it is important for people to ask before buying?

How soon can you deliver?

3 Who do you most admire (in or out of the trade)?

Dad. He is the reason I am doing this and the person I admire most both professionally and personally.

4 One object you could not do without?

The cafetière.

5 Real ale or espresso martini?

Espresso martini without hesitation.

A c.1920 Art Deco sculpture group by Jules-Edmund Masson (1871-1932) depicting two greyhounds on a rocky base. The sculpture won a gold medal at an edition of the Salon des Artistes Français. It is priced at £4800 from Markies Antiques.
