Black Forest liqueur set in the form of a bear carrying a flask and glasses on his back, ticket price £960 from Chester’s Farm Gallery, Northamptonshire.

Although originating in Germany, despite the name Black Forest these carvings of bears and other animals and trees, dating back to the 1800s and made from lime or linden wood, are usually from the town of Brienz in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland

At the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Lake Brienz emerged as a popular stopover for gentlemen undertaking a Grand Tour. In the 19th and early 20th century, wealthy Europeans bought Black Forest carvings as a symbol of wealth and luxury. The workshops applied their skill to a wide variety of useful household items including ornate cuckoo clocks, hat stands, inkwells, umbrella stands, chairs and tables.

The unusual set here will be on sale from Chesters Farm Gallery with a ticket price of £960.
