A private collection of works by West Country Impressionist painter F Stuart Richardson (1855-1934) goes under the hammer at Chilcotts in Honiton on March 7.

Many of these paintings, studies and sketches have never been hung: the current owners, descendants of the artist, have kept them in attic storage since the 1930s.

The consignment numbers 19 finished works in oil and watercolour, nine unframed oils on board and 21 in watercolour and pencil.

They portray some of the topography beloved of the Staithes group, scenes from his native Bristol, Malvern and Sheldon plus those painted on European travel.

Estimates for the oils, such as an evocative scene of shrimpers in Katwijk, Holland, shown above, are between £300-500, with watercolours from £50-250.


A gilt metal and white enamel eight-day travel clock inscribed for Harrods Ltd London has an estimate of £100-150 at Bolton Auction Rooms on March 23.

Lionel Edwards (1878-1966) is best known for his scenes of the hunt and other aspects of British country life.

However, this pen and ink sketch above is one of two offered for sale by Cheffins in Cambridge on March 11-12 that were painted during the Great War when Edwards (like contemporaries Cecil Aldin and Alfred Munnings) served as remount purchasing officer. The unit was responsible for the purchase and training of horses and mules for use in the British Army.

Signed and dated 1914, The Silent Battery – L Battery near Compiègne, France measures 14 x 22in (35 x 55cm) and has an estimate of £500-800.

This 1915 watercolour above titled The Blasts of War Mid the Blasts of Winter is by the American journalist and illustrator Charles Mills Sheldon (1866-1928). During the First World War, he worked as a correspondent for the Associated Press and several British periodicals, in this case JA Hammerton’s The War Illustrated Album Deluxe (Volume II, the Winter Campaign 1914-1915).

Signed, framed and glazed, the 14in (35cm) square illustration carries an estimate of £500-800 at Rowley’s in Ely on March 7.

The March 5 sale at Cuttlestones in Penkridge, Staffordshire, on March 5 includes a 7in (16cm) high Austrian cold painted Orientalist bronze in the manner of Franz Bergman.

Modelled as a north African street trader with a menagerie of exotic birds and a monkey sitting on a table eating a banana, it is estimated at £500-800.


This 16th century Italian maiolica istoriata plaque above, 11 x 8in (28 x 21cm), has been in an English private collection for more than 50 years. Probably made in Urbino c.1580, the subject decorated in hues of yellow, ochre, green and blue is Vulcan forging Cupid’s arrow.

The estimate is £800-1200 at Chiswick Auctions on March 10.

Lucy Harwood (1893-1972) was one of the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing’s longest-serving students, attending from its opening in Denham in 1937 and later moving to a nearby village when the school moved to Benton End in 1940.

She had her first solo exhibition at The Minories, Colchester, in 1975 and further shows at Sally Hunter Fine Art.

This 2ft x 18in (61 x 46cm) oil of boats on a river above was given by the artist to her next-door neighbour on the occasion of the birth of her son. It comes by descent for sale at Bishop & Miller in Stowmarket, Suffolk, on March 7 with an estimate of £500-700.

This pair of Staffordshire flatback figures above is believed to depict the cricketers Julius Caesar and George Parr. Two sizes of these figures are known: these are the larger of the two at 14in (35cm) high.

They were purchased by the vendor from Oliver Sutton of Kensington in November 1983. A photocopy of the invoice is sold with the figures, which have an estimate of £700-1000 at Knights Sporting Auctions in Leicester on March 7-8.
