Its Post War and Contemporary sale on May 22 in Chicago will feature paintings, drawings, prints and sculpture from several single-owner collections.
Collectors and philanthropists Ann and Paul Arenberg from St Louis, Missouri, inherited their love of modern art from Paul’s parents, Frances and Milton, who purchased the Barbara Hepworth (1903-75) bronze pictured above from the David Anderson Gallery, New York, in 1962.
It was previously at the Martha Jackson Gallery, New York.
The US was properly introduced to Hepworth after the Second World War as the Cornwall-based artist spread her wings internationally and created links with American galleries to promote her work.
Titled Aegean, this 1956 bronze measures 11 x 9 x 11in (28 x 23 x 28cm) and is numbered 1 from an edition of six. The work is recorded as BH 217, cast 1/6, in the catalogue raisonné of Hepworth sculptures and is referenced in the Tate Gallery’s Volume of Sculpture Records archives.
It carries an estimate of $100,000-150,000.
Turner's fishermen
A highlight of Hindman’s American and European Art sale on May 23 in Chicago is a watercolour and ink on paper by JMW Turner (1775-1851).
Titled Fishermen with Their Nets off a Sandy Bank and signed W Turner lower left, the work is typical of the artist’s dramatic seascapes and depictions of the effects of light.
It comes to market from a US private collection, with a provenance to Sotheby’s London, where it was sold on March 16, 1978, and to Thos Agnew and Sons. Measuring 6¼ x 9in (16 x 23cm), Hindman is expecting the watercolour to fetch a price in the region of $40,000-60,000.
