Richard Johnson of Cornell University intends to prove his point as he conducts an experiment at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam this week.

According to a report in the latest Christian Science Monitor, Johnson claims to have developed a “visual signature” for Van Gogh’s style by analysing a database of 101 paintings by the artist and his known imitators. This signature can be distilled into numbers and used as a benchmark by which to judge other works.

The system can be used for other artists in the same way, it is argued.
