Numerous multiple-estimate bids were being frantically screamed across the packed saleroom at auctioneer Tobias Meyer, helping to generate a record-breaking total of $13.2m (£8m), far above the pre-sale valuation of $6-8m.

Zhang Xiaongang (b.1958) was the star of the show, capturing three out of the four top prices, led by Bloodline Series: Comrade No.120, right, which topped the sale to loud rounds of applause with a record $860,000 (£520,000) after attracting competition from at least 12 bidders.

Overall, 21 artists' records were established and of the 245 lots on offer, 220 (90 per cent) found buyers. Sotheby's and Christie's recent Asian art sales in New York - which also included record-breaking auctions of contemporary Indian art - will be reported more fully in next week's ATG.
