Regardless of what is happening in the world economy, if an Edgar Hunt farmyard scene is fresh to the market and in reasonable condition it is almost certain to sell. A pair of signed and dated 1926 canvases by Hunt, one shown right, proved the point at Aylsham auctioneers Keys’ (10% buyer’s premium) November 14 sale of the contents of The Old Rectory, North Tuddenham, Norfolk when they sold to the London trade on the telephone for a mid-estimate £25,000.
Measuring 10 by 14in (25 x 36cm) and in untouched condition, they attracted interest from three telephones and two bidders in the room.
The painter who just stayed in the farmyard
Modern British in date, but blissfully unaffected by Fauvism, Cubism, Vorticism and just about every other ‘ism’ that was changing the face of Western art, Edgar Hunt (1876-1953) enjoys perennial popularity among picture buyers with more traditional tastes.
