The top or cantle of a sporran is often elaborately decorated and this example is mounted in silver embellished with Celtic knots and studs by the Edinburgh silversmith Henry Tatton in 1922.
It has a silver mounted leather strap by the same maker hallmarked for two years later.
Estimated at a modest £180-220 as part of an April 6 antiques and interiors auction, bidding eclipsed this range with the hammer finally falling at £6400.
