The first was billed as the ‘Head of François Bénévol,’ a 1920s-era carved wooden likeness he used during his séance performances.

During the course of the act, Bénévol would appear to behead himself - earning him the nickname ‘le coupeur de têtes’ (chopper of heads).

With a €500-600 estimate, the prop topped out at €1100 (£946) on February 19.

A colour-lithographed promotional poster for Bénévol’s act also crossed the block.

Le légendaire professeur Bénévol was undated, though was early 20th century in style.

It doubled its low estimate to close at €400 (£344).
