Pairs of similar sprung road loco lamps were typically hung either side of the front wheel pillar. These examples offered for sale by Claydon Auctioneers (19.5% buyer’s premium) in Middle Claydon, Buckinghamshire, on February 25 were very much in the manner of the maker Eli Griffiths & Sons and a model called The Meteor.
They are keenly sought after by collectors of steam-driven vehicles and this pair was particularly admired for the remarkably complete and original condition.
Estimated at £100-200, the lanterns ended up bringing £4000.
