Abstract Expressionist exhibition

An exhibition on second-generation Abstract Expressionist Helen Frankenthaler (1928-2011) and her cohort kicks off a series of three exhibitions held at Shapero Modern this spring as the firm celebrates its 10th anniversary.

Abstract Expressionism, running from April 4-27, features Frankenthaler’s works on paper and the ways in which her work departed from that of the first generation of artists in the movement, such as Willem de Kooning and Jackson Pollock.

Coming up are an exhibition on Marc Chagall (1887-1985) from May 2-June 15 showcasing a collection of lithographs produced in his 90s and a retrospective on Contemporary artist Howard Jeffs from June 18-July 13.

Classic garden designs

Gloucestershire dealership Architectural Heritage has launched a new company devoted to contemporary reproduction of classic garden designs. The products offered by Heritage Handmade Garden Collections are made to order using traditional techniques.

One line is devoted to a partnership with The National Trust, reproducing a Sissinghurst Castle copper planter and dodo statue from Mount Stewart, and others focus on materials: Verdigris copper, age-patinated artificial stone, forged iron, carved stone, bronze, wood and lead.

Architectural Heritage continues to run offering antique garden ornaments and statuary alongside Modern British art.

Art & Design in focus

Fine Art Society stages Art & Design 1890-1950 at its London gallery from March 22-April 20. It is the first of a two-part exhibition, the second part of which, covering 1950-2000, takes place in May.

The shows present a variety of painting, printmaking furniture, textiles and applied arts, demonstrating a break from conservative tastes. It touches on women’s careers in the arts, the Arts & Crafts movement, Modernism and a later return to tradition after the First World War.

Prices range from £600-60,000.

W Shanshan, the early Asian art specialist in London, has worked with performance artist, poet and tea master Marie Ma on a series of events that mix antique ceramics with Chinese tea ceremonies. Ma’s tea ceremonies are held to help a new generation understand the ceremony, mixing in creative elements including poetry.

Ma says she hopes to “introduce Chinese literati’s aesthetics on tea from ancient poems and interweave it with my own work and interpretations to deliver an immersive experience”.
