“The beginning of the year was very good, but the economy then pinched,” she says. “However, standholders are pretty philosophical about the current climate and go with the flow – one month might not be so great but the next is amazing.”
Which maybe neatly sums up much of the current fairs scene.
Organic ingredients
However, the general Art Deco and Art Nouveau market still seems strong, particularly for the latter collecting field.
Mark Gorringe of Gorringe Antiques in London is a regular trader at the Dovehouse events at the Dorking Halls in Surrey (the next is on Sunday, October 22).
The second-generation antiques dealer specialises in Nouveau and Deco pieces.
He says: “I have sold in Dorking bronze gilt paper knives, patinated bronze vases and Gallé glass all in the higher price brackets. For me Art Noueau/Jugendstil is the last great movement before the First World War and I love the organic shapes and floating of the designs, especially the strong continental designs.”
