No fewer than 144 of 255 lots on November 26 and 249 of 348 lots on November 27 were made in the Lambeth or Burslem factories.
The lot with the highest estimate is a Doulton Lambeth saltglaze figure of mice and frogs playing tug of war, by George Tinworth. None of Tinworth’s ‘humoresques’ were made large multiples (typically they were created in a mould then hand-finished by Tinworth and his workshop) but the Tug of War is particularly rare. It is estimated at $7000-10,000.
Royal Doulton Sung glazed figure of a smiling Buddha by Charles Noke. Estimate $3000-5000 at Lion and Unicorn.
The other great figure in the early history of factory is Charles Noke. Perhaps his greatest achievement as Art Director was the creation of a range of experimental glazed wares in ranges he called Flambe, Titanian, Sung, Chinese Jade, Chang and Crystalline. Offered here is a rare c.1919 figure of the smiling Buddha in the high-fired Sung glaze that is estimated at $3000-5000.
