Blue Hyacinths In A Winter Landscape from c.1960 was offered by Milnthorpe saleroom 1818 Auctioneers (20% buyer’s premium) in a timed online sale ending on September 24, estimated at £7000-10,000.
Nicholson spent some time in Cumbria and this 2ft 1in x 2ft 5in (63 x 74cm) oil on board was typical of her style and subject, reflecting her love of the still-life subject matter within a landscape setting. The painting appears on page 1 of Christopher Andreae’s book Winifred Nicholson.
After a good competition, it was knocked down at £48,000 to a bidder via thesaleroom.com.
