Simeon Solomon’s and Henry Holiday’s Artistic Heroes, estimated $3000-4000 at Capsule Auctions.
The six figures seated together are Mozart, Shakespeare, Dante, Michaelangelo, Beethoven and Titian.
Solomon and Holland met as students and were both members of the Artists Rifles volunteer unit. It was Solomon, deemed something of a prodigy by the Pre-Raphaelites, who introduced Holland to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris.
The 8 x 9in (20 x 23cm) ink and pencil on paper comes for sale at Capsule Auctions in New York on November 2 as part of the estate of Seymour Stein with a guide of $3000-4000. It last sold at Bonhams Knightsbridge in 2008.
