The scene depicted on the 9 x 12in (23 by 30cm) panel is ancient Rome’s Temple of Vesta.
It sold to a London dealer at a top-estimate £7000 when offered by Elstob (25% buyer’s premium) in Ripon on April 5.
“At first glance it looked like a painting,” said auctioneer David Elstob when the micromosaic was brought to a valuation day.
