Hartnell was particularly well known for dressing Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother. These nine drawings include sketches for the queen and Princess Margaret.

Catalogued across four lots, they featured these two signed pencil, watercolour and gouache drawings (above) measuring 14 x 10in (35.5 x 25.5cm) titled Specially designed for HRH The Princess Margaret.

One is of a black dress and jacket with two fabric swatches pinned to the top left corner, the other a 1950s full skirt dress in claret with blue embellished elbow length cuffs. Delivered is pencilled on the former and the latter is inscribed Reject 11. Estimated at £150-250, they sold for £260 in Staffordshire.

Also going to an online buyer, this time for £160 (guide £80-120) was a signed pencil and watercolour design titled Specially designed for: H.M.THE - QUEEN (probably Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother). It depicted a peach and brown/fur-trimmed dress and coat with matching hat, bag, gloves and shoes, inscribed No 3 to the top left corner.
