Numerous lots went for way more than was expected.
As was to be expected, many of the most sought-after pieces were made by Märklin, among them a highly detailed Central-Bahnhof (Central Station) with ticket office, waiting room and left-luggage counter, which rose from €9500 to €34,000 (£30,360).
Considerable interest at the auction on January 20 emerged for an unusual mountain landscape with bridges and tunnels, fitted for an O Gauge electrified rack-railway. There were several bidders on hand with enough space to house the 6ft (1.82m) wide model; they pushed the price to €26,000 (£23,215), more than two and a half times the guide.
A rare O Gauge freight car for the US market with the logo of the Schlitz Brewery, ‘the beer that made Milwaukee famous’, changed hands for €22,000 (£19,640), over four times the estimate.
