In the same year, Haring had been diagnosed with AIDS, which was to kill him only two years later. In fact, he had long been fascinated by thoughts about the end of humanity and his 1988 series, which was printed in New York in an edition of 90, was another example of his pre-occupation.

In the sale of modern art on February 8-9, Nagel (25% buyer’s premium) in Stuttgart offered number six of the edition for €50,000 (two serigraphs above). It had been given to the vendor, a local collector, in 1997.

After a vigorous exchange of bids, it was knocked down to a Dutch collector on the phone for €100,000 (£89,285).
