In the classic shape representing a young female body, but unmarked and smaller than most such vases at 6½in (17cm), it had probably been bought in Hong Kong in the 1960s.

As such, the meiping – literally ‘plum vase’ and originally used to hold plum blossom – was thought relatively modern and given a £60-80 estimate in the January 20 sale at Ramsay Cornish (22% buyer’s premium) in Edinburgh.

Photographs were available to potential buyers and it triggered wide interest, eventually selling online to a bidder in the UK for £11,000.
