It dates from 1936 when the artist spent the summer in the city and painted this view of the port in the tradition of earlier masters such as Canaletto, Turner and Monet.

Warships in the port of Venice, a 2ft 1½ x 2ft 8in (65 x 81cm) oil on canvas signed Marquet lower left, featured in the exhibition Marquet La Méditerranée d’une rive à l’autre at the musée Paul Valéry in Sète in 2019. It will be included in the forthcoming catalogue on the artist’s work being prepared by the Wildenstein Institute.

The estimate is €400,000-600,000.
