The Sèvres collection of the Duke of Bedford, Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire has a vase of the same model and size, and similar vases of a smaller size in different colours can be found in the US at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts.

This example (with the painter’s mark for Charles Nicolas Dodin) was part of the collection of continental porcelain and furniture from the estate of the dealer Robert Compton Jones (1932-2020) sold by Leonard Joel in Sydney on May 30.

It had a couple of small condition issues (some restoration to neck and one handle) but, estimated at Aus$50,000-80,000, it took Aus$170,000 (£89,080) plus 25% buyer’s premium.

Compton Jones, a dealer in Old Master paintings, had dual citizenship and spent his life between the UK and Australia.
