Bought half a century ago in Epping for £200, it came for sale at Stacey’s (25% buyer’s premium inc VAT) in Essex on May 23 with an estimate of £20,000-30,000.

The ‘one owner since new’ manual wind chronograph (Ref 6263) purchased in 1975 had its original box and all paperwork. Following the sort of interest now expected for a classic vintage brand, it made £45,500.

Produced from the early 1970s through to 1987, the Daytona ref 6263 has the second-generation screw-down chronograph pushers that separate it from earlier vintage Daytona references that were fitted with traditional pump-style pushers.

As indicated by the word Oyster on the dial it also came with enhanced water resistance. The watch was made with different dials variants that today cause prices to vary wildly. Relatively early versions of the 6263 such as this did not include a red Daytona signature.
