The 14in (35cm) flattened disc form with a matt white glaze with radiating green lines is similar to a piece illustrated on the front cover of Emma Crichton-Miller’s monograph The Pottery of John Ward.
Ward, who died earlier this year, hand-built his pots using strips of clay, cutting and re-joining sections to create patterns and surface texture.
Dreweatts’ 12-piece private collection, offered as part of a sale of Modern and Contemporary art in Newbury, included examples of many of the glaze types and forms that defined his work after a move from London to Pembrokeshire in 1979.
Previously all of the highest prices for Ward at auction were for the distinctive matt-glazed black-and-white panelled vases which Ward began producing in the 1990s.
One measuring 10in (26cm) tall sold for £17,500 at Rogers Jones in Cardiff, while another had made £18,000 (plus 20% premium) at London specialist Maak in May 2016.
Several studio pottery records have fallen recently. Mallams regained the record for a pot by Jennifer Lee (b.1956) in May when a large asymmetrical vessel from c.1990 sold at £40,000. Last October, £520,000 was bid at Bonhams for a c.1968 monumental Tall Bottle Vase with Disc by Hans Coper, setting a record for any studio potter.
