Sasha dolls at Tennants, £1300.
Like the Kämmer & Reinhardt dolls of an earlier era (see ‘the urchin’ sold for £43,000 at Vectis, ATG No 2597), Sashas were admired for their individualism, realistic expressions and attention to detail. Today, collectors are paying four figures for the most desirable production examples.
A small collection of the dolls featured in Tennants’ (22% buyer’s premium) Costume, Accessories and Textiles Sale in North Yorkshire on May 26 included a lot comprising a late 1960s/early 70s Sasha and Gregor (her brother), which sold for £1300 (estimate £300-500). The girl doll was an early model without a philtrum - the groove between the base of the nose and the border of the upper lip.
Dungarees wear well
A single Sasha at Hansons, £2200.
A single Sasha doll with ‘early head, no philtrum, experimental eyes’ made £2200 against a guide of £400-600 at Hansons’ (25% buyer’s premium) Bishton Hall saleroom on June 7.
It was dressed in dungarees, 1965-66, an outfit from the same period it was produced. This was an early model from the Trendon Toys/Frido factory in Stockport, Cheshire, where Sasha dolls were made from 1965-86.
A 1966 Frido Sasha Redhead Ballet doll sold for £1050 (estimate £200-400) in the same auction.
