Archibald A McGlashan, Landscape and figures, oil on panel, £5500 at Ottocento.
The oil on panel is a typical example of the artist’s inter-war painting, showing two young women gazing out over a Scottish landscape. Trained at the Glasgow School of Art, McGlanash exhibited widely and was a member of the Society of Eight and the Glasgow Art Club.
Ottocento holds the exhibition at its Petworth gallery until January 13, bringing together many familiar names such as Stanley Spencer, Laura Knight, Lynn Chadwick and Elisabeth Frink.
Other highlights include two signed prints by Francis Bacon, early pieces by Patrick Hughes and a selection of works by Adrian Heath, whose popularity has been on the rise according to the gallery.
Another highlight is The Peaceable Kingdom by Beryl Cook (1926- 2008), a 1996 update on the 19th century works by US Quaker painter Edward Hicks.

These pictures were visual representations of the biblical idea of a world where the lion lies down with the lamb, and Hicks’ scenes grouped children in alongside various carnivores and domesticated animals.
Cook’s typically humorous update includes a dodo, a very large chipmunk and two gambolling cherubs in the sky above.
