One of the original architects of the Marvel Universe, with Stan Lee he breathed life into the character of Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man.

It was Ditko’s own copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 (pictured here) that sold for $10,000 (£7870) at PBA Galleries (25/20% buyer’s premium) in Berkeley, California, on August 3.

When he died at the age of 90 five years ago, he owned between one to three copies of each of the 41 Spider- Man comics that he drew. They formed part of his estate and have since been issued with certificates of authenticity by his brother Patrick Ditko.

None of the Ditko copies are pristine. The only complete set of 41 Spidey comics belonging to Steve Ditko was featured in PBA’s December 2022 sale when a copy of #1 graded just 4.5 sold for $35,000. Another incomplete set of 23 Ditko comics was sold by Heritage in 2021.

This ‘third’ Ditko copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 was missing page 16 and CGC graded 5.0.

Other copies with this grade might bring around $3000-4000 but the provenance to the co-creator of many people’s favourite Marvel superhero ensured it commanded a significant premium.
