However, it is indicative of the current market that a 21st century painting purchased in Paris in 2006 took the top spot.

This was the ink, pigments and varnish on canvas titled Cercle Ascese (from Silencieuse Coincidence) by French artist Fabienne Verdier (b.1962).

Composed of two large canvases connected to the back it has a provenance to Galerie Ariane Dandois.

Estimated at $60,000- 80,000 it achieved $120,000 (£97,060) – the second highest price paid to date for the artist.

The highest price was paid in June 2019 at Christie’s Paris for the work ‘Méandres II’ (2011) sold at €120,000 (£105,390).
