A late 17th century and later large ash and elm Turner's armchair, possibly from the Lake District, estimated at £2500-3500 at Bonhams.
Now named the Oak and Vernacular Furniture, Folk Art and Naïve Paintings sale, it will take place on September 27 at Bonhams Edinburgh, the first of an annual event (in addition to the saleroom’s regular calendar).
Bonhams originally sold oak furniture in Chester before moving to Oxford in 2014, then to New Bond Street from 2015. In 2019 they returned to sales in Oxford for 18 months.
Charlie Thomas, director of Bonhams’ private collections and house sale department, said: “The market has been selective for some time and with this sale we are aiming to bring it to a wider audience mixing good oak furniture with naive and folk art.
“The market for folk art and naïve paintings continues to grow, as decorators, dealers and collectors embrace its naïve charm and frankness.”
Highlights of the 314-lot sale include this late 17th century and later large ash and elm Turner's armchair, possibly from the Lake District (pictured top). It is estimated at £2500-3500.
Other highlights include a collection of 150 Welsh love spoons (as reported in ATG issue 2555).
