That was in 1984 when the trunk cost a princely £12 (all of around £30 in today’s money).
The canvas and wood trunk bearing the LV monogram and a serial number dating it to 1909-14, has been authenticated by Louis Vuitton. “I kept noticing the name Louis Vuitton crop up on antiques shows and the BBC’s Antiques Roadshow valued it at £3000-5000”, said the owner.
It was in good original condition and at Hansons’ (25% buyer’s premium) auction in Teddington on July 30 it was estimated at £4000-6000.
The trunk sold to an Italian collector/dealer at £7300.
