The blue and white vase, which was thought to have dated to the long reign of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), was decorated with a scene from the epic Chinese novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms which is attributed to the 14th century writer Luo Guanzhong and covers the turbulent history of the 3rd and 4th centuries and the final years of the Han Dynasty.

The vase, consigned by a north German collector, was guided moderately at €600, but went on to sell to a Chinese bidder on the phone for €46,000 (£40,000).
