How the modern masters grappled with the body and their different approaches is explored in an upcoming show at London gallery Connaught Brown.

Over 20 works have been sourced for Exploring Figuration, which runs from October 20-November 25, including pieces by Degas, Renoir, Chagall, Dubuffet, Chadwick and Lobo.

The gallery says the time is ripe for a show on the body: “There has been a new focus on figuration in recent years. Ownership of one’s image, the gaze, physicality, and the meaning of being human have been called to question.”

Jean Dubuffet’s (1901-85) Personnage et paysage (1962) from the Personnage des Légendes series in which he depicted heavily outlined figures within undetermined space, is priced in the region of £475,000 while Baltasar Lobo’s (1910-93) marble Torse penché dans l’espace (1970), characteristic of the artist’s sensual representation of the female body, has a price tag of around £74,000.
