Textile panels of this type were used to cover the interior walls of the Shrine of the Prophet in the Mosque of the Prophet and were replaced on the accession of a new sultan to the throne. Typically, they were later used to cover the tomb of the late monarch or distributed among favoured dignitaries.

Measuring 8ft 6in x 4ft 11in (2.59 x 1.49m), this example comes for sale at Curated Auctions in London on October 20 as part of a private collection of Islamic art. The estimate is £30,000-50,000.
