Winsor McCay artwork for a Christmas message – $60,000 (£53,810) at Heritage.
Sold at $55,000 (£49,325) in Dallas was a 12-section, full-page ink over graphite artwork for ‘Happy New-Year 1911!’. The artwork was published in lieu of a political cartoon in the New York Herald on New Year’s Day.
A little more expensive, at $60,000 (£53,810), however, was his artwork for the seasonal message illustrated above, one that probably ran in lieu of a political cartoon at another Christmas, though where and when is not now recorded.
Heritage could date the signed artwork only to some time in the first two decades of the 20th century.
