1 How did you get your start?

My introduction to rugs was completely accidental. It was really the direct result of my need to survive in the US. I arrived after the Iranian Revolution around 1980. I opened a rug shop with my brother and my cousin in Short Hills, NJ. Without any prior experience, but always remaining open to learning and growing, we started getting our first customers. Soon our client base grew and we expanded to Morristown, NJ, and later to midtown Manhattan.

2 What is one great discovery you’ve made?

My wife has been the greatest discovery of my life. Ever since we met, she has been a great partner and supporter. She has great taste and is extremely in synch with today’s market trends.

3 What is your holy grail – something you’d love to get your hands on?

I would love to have the Payzyryk rug in my collection. This is the oldest rug in the world, over 2000 years old – possibly 3rd century BC – and currently housed at the Hermitage in St Petersburg, Russia. I would love to steal it.

4 What is one thing you couldn’t do without?

My laptop. It allows me to be superflexible and quick. I am always on the lookout for exceptional pieces. An important prerequisite to building a serious collection is the ability to be the first to search and acquire exceptional pieces. This can often make or break a business in our industry.

5 Real ale or espresso martini?

Definitely a real ale. For the alcohol content! But also the unique, simple taste.
