Preparatory study for La Vigne et le Vin by Jean Dupas (1882-1964) – estimate €20,000-30,000 at Briscadieu in Bordeaux.

Among the graphic works will be a large drawing by the artist Jean Dupas (1882-1964). It is a preparatory study for his painting La Vigne et le Vin which was part of the decoration for the Bordeaux pavilion at the landmark 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, the show that gave the name Art Deco to the world.
Dupas was one of four artists chosen to provide paintings to decorate the central hall of the city’s pavilion based around the theme of Bordeaux’s and Aquitaine’s main economic resources. The city acquired the four finished paintings after the Exposition finished and they are now in the Musée d’Aquitaine.
Dupas’ drawing, which is very close to the final work, depicts a frieze of figures executed in his characteristic elongated and sinuous style which celebrates the production and enjoyment of wine.
The 3ft 3in x 9ft 2in (1m x 2.8m) drawing is executed in charcoal and stump on paper laid down on canvas. The drawing was displayed in the Villa Herrara in Biarritz, the Art Deco villa constructed in 1925 which takes its name from its first owner, the Chilean fertiliser magnate and cigar manufacturer Jorge Oscar Hererra.
The estimate is €20,000-30,000.
