A corner of a Mid-century/modern room-set which is part of a selling show at Wyke House.
A former 1900s grocer’s shop in the Cotswolds town of Dursley, which had lain empty for two decades and opened last year as an art and antiques shop named Wyke House (ATG No 2515), is running a selling show of Mid-century and modern pieces until the end of March.
This collecting field is a particular passion of co-owner Simon Carter.
Gone for the moment is the stock of Georgian, Victorian and later decorative antiques and in has come room settings including a couple of the most popular prints of the 20th century – Tretchikoff’s Green Lady (or Chinese Girl) – plus Portmeirion, Midwinter, Denby and Hornsea ceramics, Whitefriars and other art glass, furniture, textiles and more art of the period.
The Tretchikoffs sold instantly but also tempting, says Carter, is “an interesting set of three early 1970s screenprints in a pop-up art style by an artist called Paul Fowler at £165, an acrylic by Essex artist Pam Dan from 1990 of reeds (probably at Snape Maltings as she did a series of works of this) at £145 and a Norman Wade limited edition 1973 screenprint of Durham Cathedral at £98”.
Prices overall range from £10-800, “with most of the glass, ceramics, metalwork and textiles in the £15-80 range with pictures perhaps a bit higher, £25-350,” adds Carter.
